Tucson Gem and Mineral Shows have always been looked to as a fairly reliable measure of what the gem trade can expect for the year ahead. This year’s show was not an exception. Expectations for 2107 are high now that the distraction of the election is behind us. The shows seemed to have lighter traffic compared to previous years, yet buyers were spending this year. Those dealers that offered high quality and unusual goods, displayed in an appealing presentation did very well this year. Quality of product and presentation proved to be key to a successful show.
Based on Tucson observations, the US market is picking up where it left off pre-recession. Popular gems are not only limited to the big three but also include many spinels and newly discovered different garnets. Buyers are eager to purchase more unusual varieties and introduce them to the consumer. American gems—from Monatana sapphires to Arizona peridots—are very popular.
