MIXED EXPECTATIONS FOR THE JCK LAS VEGAS SHOW

In the US, the current economic outlook highlights the complexity of the retail market. The strong surge in consumer confidence observed after last November’s election has decreased some in more recent months. This decline has been attributed to the realization that key components of the election policy agenda, namely health care and tax reform, are not being fully supported by all of our Congress. The ensuing pause appears to be softening demand among a range of retail sectors. Interestingly, the consumer confidence index, which early this year reached its highest level since the year 2000, declined in both April and May. Although the business environment is still perceived as favorable there are increasing indications that the administration will continue to face hurdles in the congress. It is important to note that in spite of the recent softening in confidence, in general, consumers still hold on to a healthy optimism regarding the economy.

In the gemstone market, dealers are reporting mixed expectations for the JCK Las Vegas show. Many are expressing uncertainty as the usual preshow demand was absent this year.
